He was carrying $565, which was to cover his company payroll and bound for Cleveland to see his mother and get his niece, Mary Camp, whose father, David Nash Camp, had died in the spring of the year. His body was originally buried in Canada at Point Abino, disinterred, brought to Buffalo and buried there. His wife was to have the body returned to Gettysburg to be buried but I can find no record of him being buried in the family plot there. The executor of his estate was Thaddeus Stevens, the PA Senator, and there is much information in the Stevens file at the Library of Congress, Documents Section.

Seth Keeler Camp was Farmer. He There is an entry in the IGI for Seth which names his wife as Philena Hall and gives his birthdate as 8 Jul 1809 but says the event place was Erie, NY. This birth year corresponds with the 1850 census for Lee Co. IA, District 29. There must be a mistake in the IGI entry. The census says he was born in NY which would place Isaac and Elizabeth there in Green Co. NY a little earlier than we thought. IGI Microfilm #1395817, Batch 8l474201, Sheet 8.      Johann Carl Friedrich Kenter was born circa 1768 at Laubach, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany.1 He was the son of Henrich Wilhelm Kenter and Clara Catherina Gutheim. Johann Carl Friedrich Kenter was described as Came to Baltimore and started up an import business. Married Elizabeth Griffith, from a prominent Baltimore family. Kenter and his partner, Gerhard Von Harten, purchased land in 1803. Von Harten was not honest, they over-extended themselves and Von Harten fled town leaving Kenter to face the music. Fortunately, he did. The court cases were finally settled and Kenter, now a widower, left for PA with his tiny daughter and one slave. He purchased land in Menallen Twp. The house is still standing today and is an historic landmark. He took up with Sally Campbell sometime after coming to PA, around 1807. He never married her and his daughter, Eliza, never acknowledged her half sister, Caroline. Caroline was left stock, etc. in Kenter's will and she and her husband had to take Eliza to court to get what was rightfully hers. Interestingly Eliza always said her father was English. I first got the clue that he was German from Caroline's statement in the 1880 census. circa 1795. He immigrated on 16 November 1795 to US General Court, Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland; Western Shore General Court Docket, Liber JG #31, Folio 9 MD USGC
I think this is where he took the oath when he got off the ship. It's called the Oath of Allegence, also An Act for Naturalization. He was naturalized on 22 March 1797 at Baltimore Court, Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland.2,3

Johann Carl Friedrich Kenter married Elizabeth Griffith, daughter of Nathan Griffith and Elisabeth Ensor, on 29 October 1799 at Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland; Mr. C.F. Kenter, merchant, and Miss Eliza Griffith, both of Baltimore were married last evening by Rev. Richards. [Oct. 30, 1799].4,5,6 Johann Carl Friedrich Kenter and Sally Campbell Carl and Sally lived together for about 30 years and she is mentioned in his will. circa 1817 at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Johann Carl Friedrich Kenter died on 1 October 1847 at Menallen Twp., Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 3 October 1847 at Flohrs Cemetery, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Kenter Eliza evidently met Mr. Hughes, her second husband, while at the Washington Hotel. He was a manager of it after W.E. Camp. [Egle's Notes and Queries, 1891, 3rd Series, Vol. II] In File 38, Harrisburg PA, W.E. Camp, there is an entry mentioning "after the separation" Hughes was paid some money. This file is dated 1849. It is said that Mr. Hughes sold all her silver while they were married.
On 14 April 1808 a suit was filed by Elizabeth's Aunt, Rachel Heide, jointly with her brother, Nathan, and her niece, Elizabeth, to divide the property of Rachel's mother [and Elizabeth's grandmother], Elizabeth Griffith, widow of Nathan. The property must have come from the Ensor side of the family because Elizabeth Griffith owned it in fee simple. It was valued at $7,080.00 current money. The property which Elizabeth Kenter equaled 1/3 and as described as follows: All that lot of ground situate on the east side of Bridge Street being part of Lot number Five and contained within the following lines and bounds BEGINNING on Bridge St. at the westermost corner of the whole lot and running north-eastward bounding on Bridge St. to a part of said Lot owned by Nicholas Merryman-thence southeastwardly bounding on that part ten perches to a lot number Six thence bounding on lot number Six south westwardly to the extent of said lot thence bounding on the out line of lot number Five to the BEGINNING on Bridge St. Also all that part of the lot on High St. which is contained within the following metes and bounds courses and distances to wit BEGINNING for the same on the north east side of High St. South eastwardly forty one feet nine inches from the south west corner of the whole lot and running north eastwardly at right angles with High St. one hundred and sisty five feet more or less to the out-lines of the whole lot thence south eastwardly bounding thereon eighty two feet to the east corner thereof thence still bounding on the outlines thereof south westwardly to High St. and thence bounding on High St. to the place of BEGINNING. Nathan received land called Griffiths Tavern and part of a tract of land called Wells Angles. Rachel received the rest of Wells Angles.
Eliza evidently owned property on High St. at Hillem in the city of Baltimore. In 1864 there was a law suit against Mrs. Worley and Wm. Woodcock over ground rent. This may be the same land as described above. She was born on 6 October 1801 at Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland. She was the daughter of Johann Carl Friedrich Kenter and Elizabeth Griffith.

Elizabeth Kenter married William Edward Camp, son of Isaac Camp Jr. and Elizabeth Nash, on 2 February 1825 at Adams County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Kenter appeared on the census of 1830 at Butler Twp., Adams County, Pennsylvania; She was listed as Eliza Hughes but E. P. was not listed. She was buried in 1877 at Arendtsville Cemetery, Arendtsville, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

His upper arm muscle was atrophied because he was without medical attention for 2 days. He applied for a pension on 25 March, 1891 since he was only able to do chores on a farm and not lift anything. He was described as 6', 185 pounds. He was granted the pension on June 17 1895 for $8.00 and I think it was retroactive from April 4 - but can't read the year. He was born on 5 March 1830 at Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Edward Camp and Elizabeth Kenter. Charles Frederick Camp began military service on 26 August 1863 at Pennsylvania; as a Private in the Union Army during the Civil War. Fought in Texas also.1

Thaddeus Stevens Camp was born on 25 September 1832 at Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Edward Camp and Elizabeth Kenter. Thaddeus Stevens Camp He was wounded on May 3, 1863 at the battle of Chancellorsville. His mother was making arrangements to bring him home when he died. We do not know where he is buried. If he was on a wagon train home then he would have been buried along the road where he died. If he died at Chancellorsville he would have been buried in a grave near the battlefield, his name written in pencil on a wooden marker. About two years later all the dead were moved to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery but his name would have faded and he would have been buried there as 'unknown'. Perhaps if his family had tried to have him removed to Gettysburg, they would not have been able to locate his grave as the name probably faded rather quickly. Helen Thomas said he had risen to the rank of Lieut. but I can find no record of him being in the military. There was no pension ever filed for and I cannot locate his wife's family or any children. I don't know if he enlisted from the state of PA or IN where he was living with his wife in 1856. on 3 May 1863.

Nash Griffith Camp was Farmer. He was described as as 5'10", brown hair, grey eyes, and fair complexion. He was born on 11 July 1838 at Middletown, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Edward Camp and Elizabeth Kenter.

Nash Griffith Camp married Julia Ann Amelia Hoover, daughter of John Hoover and Sophia Susannah Beecher /Bucher, on 1 September 1859 at Beechersville, Adams County, Pennsylvania. Nash Griffith Camp was enrolled at Gettysburg PA, Oct. 16, 1862 and was mustered Dec. 3, 1862 as a Captain of Co. I. Elected and commissioned Major Dec. 6, 1862 at Camp Suffolk, VA, to fill an original vacancy, but was not mustered in as a Major until Dec. 22, 1862 because the Regiment was moving and the commission failed to reach him. His papers say he was due the difference in salary between Dec. 6 and Dec. 22. In May and June of 1863 he was absent and sick at Fort Monroe, Va. He was mustered out July 28, 1863.
The regiment was immediately ordered to the front, and on the 8th moved via Washington and Newport News, to Suffolk, arriving on the 17th. It went into camp on the South Quay Road, but was subsequently transferred to a position on the Somerton Rd. Schools for instruction of officers were established, and the men thoroughly drilled in tactics; attention being also given to picket, guard and provost duty, and the construction of defensive works. It was brigaded with the Thirteenth Indiana, One Hundred and Twelfth New York, Sixth Massachusetts, and One Hundred and Sixty-Sixth, PA regiments, forming part of the First Division of the Seventh Corps. The first active service of the regiment was in a diversion in favor of the column under General Ferry, moving into North Carolina.
Colonel Gibbs, of the One Hundred and Thirtieth NY, was in command, and for three days he was upon the march, along the borders of the Great Dismal Swamp. No enemy was met, and on the 12th, the command was again settled in camp. Little occurred to mar the monotony of guard and fatigue duty, until the 20th of January, 1863, when the enemy made his appearance at Deserted House, 6 or 8 miles away. .... Two other companies, D and I, were sent with the 112 NY, in pursuit, occasionally skirmishing with his rear-guard; but failed to bring him to a stand. The Casualties in the companies engaged were one severely and several slightly wounded.
In early April, Longstreet with 40 thousand men advanced upon Suffolk. The head of the Nansemond River was regarded as the key to all the appproaches to the mouth of the James River because of a railroad crossing there. The most important battle there was on the 24th of April when Nash Camp's unit, the 6th MA, 166 PA and a section of Neil's Battery advanced against the enemy's position on the Somerton Rd. The purpose was a diversion in favor of General Corcoran who was charged with a real demonstratin in force on the Edenton Rd. The battle lasted from 1 PM until night fall when the object of the movement withdrew. The loss to the 165th was one killed, one mortally, and several slightly wounded. The seige has lasted for nearly a month.
On the 13th of May the 165th joined an expedition led by Colonel Foster to guard a working party engaged in the destruction of the Weldon RR. They had to retreat from that toward Carrsville where they regrouped and held the enemy in check. The loss was 88 wounded. They returned to Suffolk on the 26th.
On June 27th the regiment embarked upon transports and moved to White House, on the Pamunky, where it joined a demonstration towards Richmond. Under General Getty they moved to Hanover Court House and broke up the railroads crossing above, destroying the bridges over the south Anna. The Rebel army was retreating from Gettysburg, having been defeated there, and as the purpose of the demonstration had been attained, the forces united and retutned to Yorktown. The term of service of the 165th had expired, and returning to Gettysburg, it was, on the 28th of July, mustered out. in 1862 at 165th Reg. P.V., Major, Pennsylvania. He He worked in Philadelphia during the Exposition in 1886 at the Customs House, Office of Inspector. He had been appointed from PA. When a Democrat was elected President he lost this position. He was paid $3.50 per diem. He returned home and died shortly after of TB. His other occupations were a storekeeper, farmer, and he was elected Justice of the Peace, Butler Twp., 21 Mar. 1872. His mother and father were very good friends with Thaddeus Stevens and Mr. Stevens helped the family all their lives. between 1864 and 1887.

Nash Griffith Camp died on 30 June 1886 at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, at age 47; Tuberculosis. He was buried in July 1886 at Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

He was the son of William Edward Camp and Elizabeth Kenter. Clarence Mortimore Camp He enlisted as a Quarter Master Sergeant at age 23, and was promoted to a 2nd Lieut. in Independent Battery B, PA Light Artillery on August 16, 1864 and was mustered out in Victoria Texas on Oct. 12, 1865. On 7 May 1865 he requested leave from Camp Harker near Nashville TN for 30 days to go home to settle his father's estate. He said he was not of age when he entered the service and the guardian appointed by the estate wished to make settlement of the funds. He did not marry. He had a baby with Phoebe Lucy Miller, daughter of Wm. & Elisabeth Miller, who lived in Butler Twp., Adams Co. practically right next door to his Grandparents, John and Sophia Hoover, and his g-aunt, Henry & Lucy Weigle. I found Clarence, age 20, living at home with his father and mother, in the 1860 census, single. Phoebe Lucy was age 17 and living with her parents. There was no baby in either household. The baby was born 14 Apr. 1859 and christened, Clarence Mortimore Camp, 15 Oct. 1859 at the Arendtsville Lutheran Church. The sponsor was the mother. He moved to St. Louis and took up farming; when he returned to Chambersburg for a visit, he caught pneumonia and died. No pension was applied for. The child is not mentioned in Eliza Kenter Camp's will. She left Clarence $1.00. in 1864 at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Julia Ann Amelia Hoover was christened on 4 April 1841 at Arendtsville Lutheran Church, Butler Twp., Adams County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of John Hoover and Sophia Susannah Beecher /Bucher.

Julia Ann Amelia Hoover married Nash Griffith Camp, son of William Edward Camp and Elizabeth Kenter, on 1 September 1859 at Beechersville, Adams County, Pennsylvania. Julia Ann Amelia Hoover Amelia was christened Julia Amelia but her marriage notice lists her as Julia Ann Amelia.
After Nash died in 1886, Amelia and her daughters, Bertha, and Mame, moved to Dayton OH. Her brother S. Gilbert Hoover, and sister, Mary Catherine, wife of S. Baker Hall, were living there. They are listed in the 1888 Dayton, OH directory living at 20 June St. Bertha was a dress maker and Mame a saleslady. Gilbert proceeded to help Amelia apply for Nash's Civil War pension for which she was eligible after the Act of 27 June 1890. Her application is dated 30 June 1890 and she said that she had no proof of her marriage because marriage records were not kept at that time. Gilbert sent an affidavit stating that he had no interest in the outcome but "that he did know she had been married; was who she said she was, and she was without means of support; must depend on others not legally bound to support her and that there was no one legally bound to her support." This was not good enough and Amelia had to get a letter from two neighbors in PA to send affidavits saying she was married. Finally she was granted the pension - $8.00 a month. She died very shortly after. [Pension #130538]. on 27 June 1890.1

Julia Ann Amelia Hoover died on 30 November 1891 at Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, at age 50. She was buried in December 1891 at Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Paul Anthony While I have no proof that this is the father of Lydia Anthony Craver, I feel there is a preponderance of evidence that this is the case. He was in Lynn Twp. Lehigh Co., PA listed in the same church record with Lydia and Elizabeth Anthony Dustman; they all came to Canfield, Mahoning Co. OH between May, 1829 and June, 1830. The rest of the children are known to be his and family information states that they, the brothers and sisters, visited back and forth with Lydia and Reuben. Also, buried beside Paul are children: two of Lydia and Reuben's and one of Abigail Anthony Fenstermacher's. However, in the 1880 census, when his living children were asked where their father was born - three different states are mentioned. Eli and Abigail say he was born in PA; Eliza say NC; and Lydia says VA.
